The Red Viper/The Handsome Revenger- Oberyn Martell. Song of Ice and Fire (GOT)

Its coming to that time again and I cannot tell you how excited I am about this season of Game of Thrones on HBO. In anticipation I want to introduce you to one of the ‘new people’ (for none reading Game of Thrones folks). The Handsome son of a King of one of the seven Kingdoms, Oberyn Martell is in King’s Landing like everyone else to witness the marriage of Joffery Lannister to Margaery Tyrell. Everyone knows there is no love lost between the Lannisters/Tyrell and the Martells going all the way back to when the Targaryens were sitting in the Iron chair. For those of you who don’t know, here’s  a brief story of the ongoing Martell/Lannister/Tyrell cold war.

House Martell of Dorne

It was said that all flowers bowed before the sun, should the roses seeks to hinder me i’ll gladly trample them underfoot.

The Lannister/Martell feud began when the Lannisters overthrow the then reigning Targaryen family at King’s Landing and killed everyone in the castle including Elia Martell and her two children.  The Tyrells earned their standoff from a long-standing feud going all the way back to Border wars and culminating in the maiming of Willas Tyrell by the Dornish prince Oberyn.

Prince Oberyn Nymeros Martell  had a very close relationship with his sister Elia. Following the Sack of King’s Landing, when he learned that she was raped and murdered by a Lannister Knight along with her son and her daughter who was killed by another Lannister knight, he attempted a coup to raise Dorne for Viserys  (Brother of Daenerys who was killed by her Dothraki husband with a molten Gold crown).  Oberyn seldom left Dorne and vow to seek revenge for his murdered sister.

Character Sketch

Oberyn is a forceful, lusty man with a quick wit and barbed tongue. At sixteen, He earned the name ‘The Red viper’ from a duel he won against Edgar Yronwood who challenged him after he was found in bed with his paramour. The duel was to first blood, given the prince’s youth and high birth, and both took cuts. Lord Edgar’s wounds festered and killed him. He was known after as the Red Viper by friends and foes due to rumors that the blade he used in the duel was poisoned and was sent to Oldtown and then to Lys in temporary exile in order for House Martell to make peace with House Yornwood.

During this ‘Exile’ Oberyn learned much about poisons and the dark arts. He studied at the Citadel for a while forging several links to become a Maester but later abandoned that pursuit after becoming bored. He then traveled the cities across the narrow sea where Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen were being kept by Ser Willem Darry and signed a secret pact promising Viserys the hand of Arianne Martell in returning for Dorne’s help in claiming the throne.

He and his brother Doran worked in secret for years planning on bringing an end to the reign of Robert Baratheon and destroying House Lannister.

Lannisters are’nt the only ones who pay their debts

And that of course brings us back to why he is King’s Landing for the Wedding of the Century.

Oberyn in King’s landing

He rode into  King’s Landing on his Black Stallion with his Paramour Ellaria Sands to attend the wedding of long standing enemies; House Lannister and House Tyrell.  His intentions are; to claim the seat on the small council on his brother, Prince Doran Martell’s behalf and avenged the death of his sister, Elia as was previously agreed upon with Tyrion lannister, Then hand of the King. When he arrived however, The Lannisters’ patriach is now Hand of the King and meant to forego earlier promises to Oberyn by claiming that Amory Loch was responsible for all three deaths; Elia and her two children (Loch was responsible for the death of only Raenarys, Gregor Clegane for Elia and Aegon)

In this season of HBO’s Game of Thrones, Oberyn is a major player in King’s Landing especially in events following the wedding of Margery to Joffrey Baratheon.  He will get some major screen time navigating the politics of the Iron Throne, having steamy enviable sex with his paramour and Killing some God-awful people.

oh the Killings!
