GALE HAWTHORNE, Character Sketch (Hunger Games Trilogy)

His eyes are grey, he is over 6 feet tall, his hair is black and his skin is olive.  Thats certainly a description of a hot guy if I ever heard one. Gale Hawthorne is  the childhood friend of Katniss everdeen, the protagonist in the Hunger Games trilogy. Hes that guy who the girl friendzoned form childhood but who in the back of her mind she thinks she might be in love with. Hes the guy that will get a one or two kisses from her but will never completely get her love because she is distracted by the comforting Peeta Mellark, something that gale, who has fire in him, will never be for her.

We Met Gale…

Gale is introduced in the beginning of book one, The Hunger Games in the woods with Katniss. They met at the age of 14 who had also lost her father in the same mining accident in which he lost his. they met while hunting in the woods outside the borders of District 12 and though their initial thought was suspicion towards each other they quickly warm to each other and became best friends.  A little before the reaping (the process where a boy and a girl is choosen to enter in the Hunger Games), he suggested to katniss a plan to run away. Gale was angry. He’s sick of living in a controlled society, she is angry at watching his family and fiends starve and having no say about his future. In the second book he’s so firmly against the Capitol that he won’t even accept a gift Katniss brings him from the region.

Catching Fire and the Love revelation

Gale admits to have fallen in love with Katniss in Catching Fire. when Katniss return to district 12 as a victor and to live across from Peeta Gale was one of the first person she wanted to see. when she met him in their hunting place he confessed his love by kissing her deeply, which Katniss admitted left her confused.

“I hadn’t imagined how warm they [Gale’s lips] would feel pressed against my own. Or how those hands, which could set the most intricate of snares, could as easily entrap me.”

gale and peacekeeper

she did not fully realised her feelings for him until he was caught by a new peacekeeper and whipped within an inch of his life Katniss and her mother nurse him back to live, at which point Katniss had a catherine moement (Catherine and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights)

“Gale is mine. I am his. Anything else is unthinkable.”

While Gale is unconscious, she thinks about Gale and her relationship with him, and she kisses him

“I’m so sorry,” I whisper. I lean forward and kiss him.
His eyelashes flutter and he looks at me through a haze of opiates. “Hey, Catnip.”
“Hey, Gale,” I say.
“Thought you’d be gone by now,” He says.
My choices are simple. I can die like a quarry in the woods or I can die here beside Gale. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to stay right here and cause all kinds of trouble.”
“Me, too,” Gale says. He just manages a smile before the drugs pull him back under.”

Gale love Katniss, but unlike Peeta who is ready to share her, Gale has very selfish needs. He shared everything with katniss and they have this bond that is almost impenetreble that is until the hunger games, that drove a rift through them that got bigger and bigger each book

“The only time I really get to see Gale now is on Sundays, when we meet up in the woods to hunt together. It’s still the best day of the week, but it’s not like it used to be before, when we could tell each other anything. The Games have spoiled even that. I keep hoping that as time passes we’ll regain the ease between us, but part of me knows it’s futile. There’s no going back.”

The old Katniss would have married Gale, the new Katniss however having met the safe and reliable Peeta she was unsure of who she wants.

“I’m sure plenty of people assumed that we’d [Katniss and Gale] eventually get married even if I never gave it any thought. But that was before the Games. Before my fellow tribute, Peeta Mellark, announced he was madly in love with me. “

Gale is Fire to Peeta’s comforting personality. With Gale and Katniss it would always be fire and passion

GALE IS LIKE WHITE HOT FIRE

While Gale is good at keeping things under control, he tends to get angry quite often, especially as far as the capitol is concerned. Katniss describes him as “a rebel since birth”. He is very protective of Katniss and her family, and would rather stay and fight with her than run away. he believes in the mantra ‘an eye for an eye’ and had no qualms about trapping and killing soldiers in the outbreak of the rebellion. It is this angry compulsive side which oftentimes put him at odds with Katniss, preventing their love from florising.

The Star of Mockingjay

In the final installment of the trilogy, Gale is one of the main characters who had a deeper relatuionship with katniss while Peeta was in the capitol  being held as a prisoner and tortured.  He volunteered to be a part of the team that rescued Peeta and became a part of the ‘star squad” that was sent to capitol to assissinate President Snow.

>>>>>>SPOILER AHEAD>>>>>>>>

he became almost like a vigilante, as a soldier out to wrong all the wrongs of the capitol through killing them all. when killed was killed it was suspected for a while that he may have been involved in the planning of the method of the attack.

At the end of the trilogy we learned that he gets a “fancy job” in District 2, the masonry district, vindicating katniss from having to choose between him or peeta.

oh and katniss choose Peeta in the end.  Katniss decides that she cannot survive without Peeta, but can live without Gale.
