So, you’ve made it past book 1, congrats and welcome to the world of fantasy fiction 🙂  Now if book 1 was all about the Starks the second installment comes packed with fire, deceptions and a war.

Readers who did not get their fix of Daenerys in the first installment of the series can jump for joy. The mother of dragons is featured quite a lot in book 2 as she continues her journey  to claim the Iron throne.  You are in luck also because this book does not drag along as other middle books usually do.

When you play the Game of Thrones  you win or you die, there is no middle .ground

Words of wisdom from Cersei before Ned lost his head. Then war is declared from every point in Westeros.

(I’m sorry, if u did not know that Ned died then you probably should’nt be reading book 2).  Five Kings are declared from book 1; Robb in the North, Stannis Baratheon at Dragonstone-, Renly Baratheon at Storm’s End (the Baratheon home), Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Isles and of course Joffery who already took the Iron throne at Kings Landing.  North at the wall, the Night Watch marches further north intent on finding the Wildings and their leader Mance Rayder.  Over in the east Dany and her Dragons treks across the Red Waste with what’s left of her loyal Dothraki clan and the ever-present Ser Jorah Mormont.

THE WHORE AND THE IMP

Yes, Joffery Baratheon (Robert’s heir) that awful excuse for a human being is now King and his whore of a mother Regent and thus believe that she is now ‘running things’.  Joffery is rotten to the core and people have wished death upon him since book one.  Alas, only the good die young it seems. Tyrion Lannister arrives to be the Hand of the King and so far we all know the demise of that profession in kings Landing.  Nevertheless, Tyrion though short in stature (he is a dwarf) is the smartest and most well read man in Kings Landing.  It’s no secret, Cersei hates Tyrion (she blames him for their mother’s death trying to deliver him) and Tyrion believes Cersei is an idiot with a vagina. The sparring between these two is hilarious and sometimes cringe worthy with all the insults and low punches thrown.

You know you are not half as clever as you think (Cersei). that still makes me twice as clever as you. (Tyrion)

Tyrion took over the running of the city much to the dismay of both his nephew and sister. He organise the army against the impending war from either one of the newly declared Kings and was even successful in this attempt though he was showered with no praises in the end.  He successfully reigned in Joffery and his sadistic ways, long enough for the battle to be over. So, basically Tyrion with is wit and smarts saved the Kingdom and what happened, his father rode in on a great big stallion, fired him and claim the victory for himself.

ALSO IN THE SEVEN KINGDOMS

Stannis Baratheon is convinced he is the one true king and is further convinced by Melisandre (a red priestess) that he is Azor Ahai (a Messianic figure of the red faith) reborn.  I think Stannis is an idiot and I think he is thoroughly whipped by Melisandre’s beauty so he would believe anything.  He rally his men to march into battle and disregard everyone elses advice but that of this red priestess. He deserved exactly what he got. Martin try to make him interesting but it is totally lost on me. Before Melissandre set foot in Westeros Stannis was just a hole up miserable old man in a broken down fort who laments about his brother being king and not him.. The most interesting thing about him is his brothers. One was a drunken whore and the other loves men.

Speaking of brothers, Renly also gathers an army of his own and is approached by Catelyn Stark to join her son Robb in the north, he agreed but a most harrowing thing occurred before any of these promises could come to fruition.

Towards the end of the book there is a massive war and one King ran for his life while the other cower in fear and allow others to do his job for him.

THAT GREYJOY IDIOT

Theon Greyjoy? ah yes, that boy, same age as Robb and warden of Ned Stark. So Theon Greyjoy after returning to the Iron Isle and finding out that his sister Asha has bigger balls than he does sets out to prove to his father, Balon Greyjoy, that he is indeed a son of the sea. Theon journey to Winterfell and to the familiar where crippled Bran stark is now Lord and proceeded to claim it as his own. A very stupid and cowardly thing to do, I mean to prove your manhood you’re going to capture a castle where a crippled 12 year-old and his 8 year old brother is lord. Even worse, Bran and Rikon Stark now have to defend themselves from someone who they once lived with like a brother. At this point in the book I’m pretty mad at George RR Martin, I mean how much more suffering does the Starks have to go through. come on!!

‘VALAR MORGHULIS’

Poor Arya Stark, escape from King Landing disguised as a boy and is forced to defend herself (she is quite little) time and time again. Enter Jaqen H’ghar, a mysterious character who Arya once saved from a fire. For this act of kindness he gave her the chance to ask him for three things. with these things accomplished , Jaqen departs but not before he gave her a coin with two heads and tell her if she ever came upon a Bravioso and need help she must only say ‘valar morghulis’ and show him the coin. Soon after Roose Bolton occupied Harrenhal (in the HBO series it was Tywin Lannister that came and Arya became his cupbearer) and Arya make a grand escape sealing the deal that she is indeed a bad ass still.

PRINCESS DANY

after months of hardship and wasting away in the Red Waste, the mother of dragons and her people finally came upon Qarth and its Leaders. After being admitted into the city grudgingly, Dany became something of an enigma with her Dragons and one particular leader of the thirteen (a prominent group of traders in Qarth) became very enamoured with her.   Xaro Xhoan Daxos. This man bathes her in jewels and promised her armies and ships. everything came with a cost of course. The mother of Dragons and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne is noones fool though.

‘You Know Nothing Jon Snow’- Ygritte

Beyond the wall, the nights watch is advancing even deeper into the enemy’s camp. Wildings are not the only things to fear beyond the wall and Jon and his brothers are scared to death even if they will not admit it. Jon is forced to prove his worth and loyalty to meet the king beyond the wall, Mance Rayder.

whew!!!! that is certainly a lot of people. If you were able to keep up then you should definitely proceed to read this book. Right away.
